The first glimpse was of the long, silky skirts flowing with the movement of graceful steps. The women looked as though they had stepped out of a Time Machine into modern Xi’an, once the political and economic heart of several ancient dynasties, including the Han and the Tang.

As the starting point of the Silk Road, which connected China to the West, Xi’an feels like the perfect place to witness the revival of Hanfu. Here Hanfu is more than just clothing, it is a living bridge between past and present, returning not only as a garment but also as a sense of pride in China’s glorious heritage.

Hanfu has always carried more than beauty. It embodied philosophy, social hierarchy and Confucian ideals of harmony and propriety. And yet much of this tradition was nearly silenced during the Cultural Revolution, when history and memory were pushed aside.
That is why, when you walk the streets of Xi’an, particularly in the late afternoon and evening, you see something very special. Women and children wearing robes inspired by different dynastic styles fill the streets. For some, Hanfu is a declaration of identity, a way to walk in the footsteps of their ancestors and carry their stories into the modern world. For others, it is an escape into beauty, the embroidered layers, wide sleeves, delicate hairstyles and carefully applied makeup offering a sense of elegance that transforms the ordinary.

The atmosphere is vibrant, alive with excitement. Some women stroll alongside local photographers who carefully stage poses against historic landmarks, images destined for family albums or prominent display in their homes.

Often many wear sport shoes beneath their robes, navigating shopping malls and escalators with ease, symbols of how past and present mingle effortlessly.

More than a revival, Hanfu feels like a return, bringing history back into the everyday rhythm of Xi’an. After an era that once tried to erase tradition, this resurgence is a reminder of honour both the beauty and the lessons of history, so that future generations can walk forward with pride.
